Thoughts

So long 2016, welcome 2017!

Living in Ireland for more than 7 years and we never celebrated the New Year in London. So this year we wanted something new, we wanted a new experience. We also missed travel. And we missed the big city.

Getting to London was more difficult than we thought it will be. Weather was stubborn and almost got our flight cancelled. Fog and rainy weather lingering above southern England was keeping London to itself under a blanket of white clouds. It was being selfish and was keeping it away from privy eyes. But then the sun broke down the fog duvet and we managed to get there, happier than ever.

With shorter days and being colder than usual we had to run around to make the most of our time there. We wanted to see the fireworks… but we missed buying tickets for the show. So we stood still for more than 5 hours on the riverside waiting for the fire to light up the sky. Mulled wine and coffee kept us warm. A hot dog filled our bellies.

Seeing how London prepared for the NYE show made me feel uneasy. Tall massive steel fences were being put up to protect the people from threats. But who was it really protecting? Who was going to protect the rest of the people who didn’t have a chance to get a ticket and could not get inside the steel fortress? Armed police and a couple of soldiers were checking bags. Others were pointing directions, some were just staring at the crowds. It looked like a scene from District 13 in Hunger Games… It was disturbing…

But lets forget about that for a second. We came to London for the fireworks and the fireworks were great! They lit up the atmosphere and made us smile. There was light in the darkness. And there was color in the lights. I honestly hope that 2017 is going to be better than last year in every way possible.

Hey, optimism didn’t kill anyone, or did it?
